Amateur golfers from coast to coast and of all playing ability will face-off on championship golf courses throughout Reno at the John Ascuaga’s Nugget Amateur Open from Monday, July 22 through Thursday, July 26.
In its second year, the event is open to any amateur golfer with an established USGA handicap index. The deadline for entering the tournament is June 30th.
Managed by Golf Digest Sports Marketing, John Ascuaga’s Nugget Amateur Open is a full-handicap competition. The tournament will be played at Redhawk Golf Club, Lake Ridge Golf Course, D’Andrea Country Club, Arrow Creek Golf Club, Sierra Nevada Golf Ranch and The Golf Club at Genoa Lakes.
After three days, the top 72 cumulative low-net finishers will move on to the Finalists Playoff at Redhawk–a recipient of four out of five stars in the latest edition of Golf Digest’s Places to Play.
“Last year’s tournament was perfect,” said John Ascuaga, owner of The Nugget. “The weather was ideal and the courses were in great shape. Responses from participants about this first-time event were universal in their enthusiasm and positive comments.”
“Golf Digest is excited about its marketing relationship with the John Ascuaga’s Nugget and the joint resources we will be investing into the growth of the Amateur Open,” said Tom Jaronski, Director of Events and Sports Marketing for The Golf Digest Companies. “The Reno/Tahoe market is an emerging golf destination with a wealth of first-class golf, resorts and other recreational activities. We look forward to showcasing the area to golfers from around the world.”
The tournament entry fee begins at $799 and includes lodging at John Ascuaga’s Nugget Casino, three days of golf, gift bags, and admission with a guest to all 19th Hole festivities which offer food, drink, entertainment, and golf skill contests. In addition to great golf, players will enjoy nightly cocktail parties, an awards banquet, tee prizes and raffle prizes that include a brand new 2001 car, vacation trips, golf equipment and more.
One hundred twenty-eight people from 17 states and Canada competed in last year’s event. Mike Winnie of Reno won the men’s Division, Don Pausenbach of Medford, Wis., came in second and Buck Anderson, of Cottonwood, Calif., was third. In the women’s Division, Pat McGinn of Omaha, Neb., won the tournament, Charlise Joy of Oceanside, Calif., came in second and Linda Wayman of Pacifica, Calif., won third place honors.
