Viewers’ Guide : Muirfield adds some length, but the wind and the bunkers give it a time-honored defense – Muirfield Golf Club, Gullane, Scotland – Brief Article – Statistical Data Included
Certainly things have changed since Muirfield’s first Open in 1892 required the field to test Old Tom Morris’ design of 5,203 yards. The present yardage of 7,034 yards, par 71, might not seem overly long, but the punishing wind and bunkers still get the job done. The course’s design–two concentric circles, clockwise on the first nine holes and counterclockwise on the inner second nine–ensures that the wind will come from all angles.
Other than adding some length to two par 3s and repositioning a fairway bunker, this is essentially the same course that challenged the game’s best a decade ago. It was good enough then, and it’ll be good enough now.
